Pastor Youa Kao Vang of Ascension Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in June of 2009. The leukemia was brought under control by 3 rounds of chemotherapy. Pr. Vang has entered Loyola University Hospital, Maywood, Illinois to begin the preparation regimen which includes destruction of his present immune system so that his body will be prepared for a “Cord Blood Transplant”. The transplant is the umbilical cord blood which has the correct stem cell typology which will allow Pr. Vang to begin the production of new, disease free blood.
Pr. Vang will be in strict isolation for the month of February. At the beginning of March, Pr. Vang will move to an apartment in Maywood so that he can make his daily visit to the clinic. He will live in this apartment for the next 100 days. This will be the period of time that the new blood will be developing and a new immune system will also develop. Pr. Vang will literally be born again with this stem cell, cord blood transplant. He expects to return to Milwaukee in June.
